Student Testimonials

In 2024, Standing Up To Stigma helped fund The Mental Game and Brandon Saho to come present and speak with students at Mariemont City Schools. The testimonials below were collected from students that attended the event.

Mental health is something not many like to talk about, even with loved ones, as it is sometimes an awkward or uncomfortable conversation. Brandon Saho, even after battling with his own struggles, took it upon himself to share that story with people who have either never felt that way, or know it all too well. But no matter who he told, the impact was the same. Hearing a message of such sadness only to be overwhelmed by hope could be felt and understood by anyone hearing his story, whether they were or were not struggling. It shed important light on how even individuals who seem to have it all; the dream job, the dream home, the dream car, doesn’t mean they don’t also face problems as well. Brandon reminded all of us about the silent battles we are too ignorant to always notice. He reminded us of what is too often forgotten. He reminded us that he is where he is today because of the help he received, and encouraged us to be that help for someone else.

When Brandon Saho came to our school, his talk about mental health was moving. Hearing his story, experiences, and conversations with athlete’s and influencers made it feel more inspiring. You could tell people were listening and connecting with his genuine words. Overall, his visit strengthened our school’s climate by creating a culture of support and unity.

As a Sources of Strength member, we were asked to help prepare for Brandon Saho’s arrival. We didn’t know what to expect at first, but when he began sharing his own mental health journey, we all felt inspired and realized we are not alone. Brandon showed us that pain CAN lead to recovery. Brandon not only influenced our lives but opened himself up as a mentor us students can talk to when we are struggling.

Listening to Brandon Saho speak was an interesting and engaging experience. He fights to break the stigma surrounding mental health and proves that anyone can struggle, even those you wouldn’t expect. Learning about his life taught us that being vulnerable isn’t a weakness. His story was important to hear because you never know what secret battles people are fighting. After seeking help, he turned his life around and now works to break the stigma by speaking at schools like ours and through his podcast, The Mental Game.
